JP Morgan and UBS have secured the top positions as mergers and acquisitions (M&A) financial advisers in the retail sector, based on value and volume, respectively in the first quarter of 2025.

GlobalData, which is the parent of Retail Insight Network, ranked advisers by the value and volume of M&A deals on which they advised.

JP Morgan has achieved the highest rank for deal value, having advised on transactions totalling $28.7bn in Q1 2025.

Meanwhile, UBS has achieved the highest rank for deal volume with its advisory role in five transactions throughout the quarter.

GlobalData lead analyst Aurojyoti Bose said: “Both JP Morgan and UBS registered year-on-year (YOY) improvement in terms of deal volume and value as well as their respective ranking during Q1 2025. While JP Morgan’s ranking in terms of value improved from the second position in Q1 2024 to the top position in 2025, UBS went ahead from 11th to the top position by volume during the same period.

“Apart from leading by value in Q1 2025, JP Morgan also occupied the second position by volume. Similarly, UBS, apart from leading by volume, also occupied the third position by value.”

Following JP Morgan in deal value was Wells Fargo with $26.3bn in advised deals. UBS was close behind with deals worth $25.4bn and Morgan Stanley came next with $24.7bn, followed by Citi at $23.7bn.

As for deal volume, JP Morgan occupied second place with advisories on four deals. Morgan Stanley and Bank of America were tied with three deals each, and Wells Fargo advised on two deals.

GlobalData’s league tables are based on the real-time tracking of thousands of company websites, advisory company websites and other reliable sources available on the secondary domain. A dedicated team of analysts monitors all these sources to gather in-depth details for each deal, including adviser names.

To ensure further robustness to the data, the company also seeks submissions of deals from leading advisers.
