UK state terrorism reinsurer Pool Re has hired Richard Roberts as its chief finance and investment officer, a newly created position.
Having joined the company in early April, Roberts reports to Pool Re CEO Tom Clementi. The appointment is pending regulatory approval.
This move comes ahead of the planned retirements of chief investment officer Ian Coulman and chief finance and operations officer Peter Aves in 2025.
Clementi said: “I am delighted to welcome Richard to Pool Re. He has an impressive track record and will bring a wealth of experience, expertise and energy to this new role.
“I would also like to thank Ian and Peter for their long-standing and immense contribution to the firm, having worked at Pool Re for a combined 30 years. I wish them both very happy retirements.”
Most recently, Roberts was the head of EMEA and Asia insurance business development at AllianceBernstein.
In this capacity, he oversaw the expansion of third-party insurance business within these key regions.
Roberts was an investment director at Aberdeen until 2022, and also had a stint at Zurich Insurance Group from 2007 to 2020.
At Zurich, he held investment and accounting roles, and later worked as the head of balance sheet investments for its UK operations.
Roberts said: “I am looking forward to embracing the challenge of joining Pool Re, a globally recognised leader in terrorism risk financing. The real draw to the firm was its tangible sense of mission and purpose, as well as the commitment of its people, which really resonated with me.

Earlier this month, the company shifted to a modernised catastrophe treaty reinsurance scheme.
The updated framework allows Pool Re members more discretion in underwriting terrorism-related commercial property damage and business interruption insurance.
